Blackshop Case Study Essay Example
Blackshop Case Study Essay Blackshop is a popular casual restaurant in the area of Cambridge. It is a well run business in quite a competitive market. However, in a competitive market, proprietors of a business must do what is necessary in order to remain competitive and ââ¬Å"maximise the number of guestsâ⬠(Cerny). Blackshop must decide whether or not the Open Table system will allow them to gain a competitive advantage, and if so, what sort of operational strategy needs to be implemented for it to be successful. Issues that need to be addressed are whether Open Table systems such as the new reservation system and the table management system will, in fact, leave Blackshop with a competitive advantage. Blackshop should adopt the Open Table system. This upgrade in technology at Blackshop will allow them remain competitive via a new reservation system which utilizes benefits of the internet, adopt a targeted marketing system through emails, gather information on customers to enhance customer satisfaction and help with facility layout problems that occur through the old reservation system. Blackshop will also need to refine its operational strategy. In a competitive market, a company must structure its company in order to meet its service concept. Operational strategy will include areas such as marketing techniques, employee selection and job satisfaction. It will also outline ways in which Blackshop can improve customer satisfaction through process control. The Open Table system is able to address areas that are important to a firm in order for it to remain competitive or gain some competitive advantage. Customer satisfaction is one of the main areas that allow competitiveness. The Open Table system allows a restaurant to enhance the customersââ¬â¢ satisfaction through a numbers of avenues. Firstly, the reservation system allows potential customers to not only call up the restaurant to book a table, but it also allows the customer to utilize the internet to ââ¬Å"make reservations without any temporal or geographical constraintsâ⬠(P+D). This type of reservation system can also be used to collect detailed information about their customers. Information such as birthdays, anniversaries and special requests can be readily available to employees which can be used to enhance the customer experience and create a far greater guest management system. It allows the employee to construct ââ¬Å"interpersonal bondsâ⬠with customers, creating the perception that ââ¬Å"the employee has personal recognition of the customersââ¬â¢ needs and knows specific details about his or her service needsâ⬠(j5). Open Table also contributes to customer satisfaction with its advanced table management system. Having a system that allows Blackshop to maximise seat utilisation ââ¬Å"effects efficiency of the process as well as creating good ambienceâ⬠(j6). Blackshop have noticed bottlenecks forming in the wine bar during busy operating times. This is created because many of the customers are walk-ins and have to wait for a table to clear up. Waiting a long time for a service can lower customer satisfaction, resulting in less repeat business. The new table management system allows patrons to be seated in an earlier manner, thus alleviating some of the problems created from walk-ins. It is for these two reasons that a restaurant should be able to create ââ¬Å"one of the most powerful promotional methods used in hospitalityâ⬠(p+d). Word-of-mouth promotions are satisfied customers recommending the restaurants to potential customers. An integral part of word-of-mouth is gaining a customerââ¬â¢s trust. It is said that ââ¬Å"customers trust in employees is likely to form if the employee and customer are well know to each otherâ⬠(j5). As alerted to previously, knowledge of customer needs and personal information forms the basis for a closeness that must exist in order for the customer to ââ¬Å"engage in word-of-mouth behaviourâ⬠(j5). This is a very powerful as ââ¬Å"a single recommendation, the only source of information obtained, is enough to convince a person to try a particular service providerâ⬠(j5). Many firms attribute their success to word-of mouth, with Harley Davidson saying ââ¬Å"positive word-of-mouth communication emanating from customer employee relationships can be attributed to most their successâ⬠(j5). Open Table also has a powerful marketing tool through the use of promotional email system. This email system can be used to create avenues to repeat business by alerting customers to Blackshops regular food events. This is also a great way to generate word-of-mouth promotions and enhance customer/employee relationships. Operations Strategy Operations strategy describes ââ¬Å"competitive priorities that internal operations will emphasizeâ⬠(text). It is also how the company ââ¬Å"should be structured in order to meet its service conceptâ⬠(text). The service concept of Blackshop will detail ââ¬Å"the reason as to why a customer will choose one service over a competitorsâ⬠(text). Blackshop service concept should be superior customer service and satisfaction through quality process control. This can be undertaken by firstly implementing the Open Table system. Blackshop must make sure that all members of staff have been fully trained on how to use the Open Table system. Benefits must be explained fully so employees feel comfortable using it to enhance customer satisfaction. As I believe customer satisfaction to be the important part of success, this should be completed before any other areas of the operations strategy are implemented. It creates word-of-mouth promotions and encourages repeat business. As quality of service is a huge competitive priority, Blackshop must continue with its stringent employee selection policy. The importance of selecting the right employee to work at Blackshop cannot be understated as many ââ¬Å"US casual restaurants learn to view their employees from a new prospective ââ¬â as strategic human capital which possesses intangible assets that are valuable to the firmâ⬠(strategy risk). Restaurants that take this view have the ââ¬Å"potential to build a human resource competitive advantageâ⬠(strategy). Employees chosen to work at Blackshop must show a certain enthusiasm towards the companyââ¬â¢s service concept. The operations strategy must also include a tailored marketing plan towards its target market. The Open Table system offers powerful email marketing campaigns that can be tailored towards its target market. However, this is only useful as a way of targeting repeat customers as their information is the only available. The Open table website also includes important information such as; location, price, menu and operating hours. I believe this is not enough to encourage new customers to book at Blackshop. As an initial solution Balckshop must first train some of their employees to use information technology systems for marketing campaigns. Training marketers to use information technology systems and having marketing reports are the most urgent and important tool for the future of marketing in the hospitality industryâ⬠(progress and dev). This means having employees construct and maintain a dedicated Blackshop website that offers more information and flare to that of the Open table website. Employees should ââ¬Å"not only create their own website, but to ensure that their we bsite is visible and easily found by search enginesâ⬠(Progress and dev). Having a dedicated website also eans that they have a new avenue to reply to customer comments. Being able to swiftly respond to customer feedback means Blackshop can ââ¬Å"gain the trust of customers and therefore more chance of repeat businessâ⬠(progress). The marketing campaign can also include current campaigns that are being undertaken by Blackshop, however, there must be a review of current content. Major discussion regarding hospitality marketing is mainly concerned with ââ¬Å"rational versus emotionalâ⬠(j4) advertising. That is, what appeals more to the consumer? Studies have found that ââ¬Å"for experiential services such as restaurant meals, the hedonic nature of the consumption experience may make emotional appeals more effectiveâ⬠(j4). Rather than advertising price information or convenient location, they should use their marketing tool to convey a message of relaxed family atmosphere with live music and great food. By employing these marketing techniques they are ââ¬Å"creating a positive post exposure attitudeâ⬠(j4) for the potential consumer, leaving them with no doubt that they should indulge in the experience that Blackshop offers. That is not to say that Blackshop should not appeal to the rational side of consumers. Price information strategy in advertising ââ¬Å"can greatly reduce the level of pre-purchase perceived risk which tends to be high with many servicesâ⬠(j4). It appeals to consumers that need to ââ¬Å"understand the service and want to know what they are receiving before making a purchase decisionâ⬠(j4). Rational advertising can also be an effective way to fill table space on quieter nights. Email marketing can also be extremely valuable is reducing the bottleneck effect at wine bar by ââ¬Å"providing information about less crowded periods or shorter waiting times, and customers encouraged to utilize themâ⬠(j2). Instilling a sense of job safety and creating a workplace where employees can thrive and grow is vital for job satisfaction. Blackshop needs to introduce strategies in its operations that allow this to happen because there is a ââ¬Å"positive linear relationship between staff satisfaction, service quality and customer satisfaction, leading, ultimately, to profitabilityâ⬠(j7). Firstly, Blackshop must empower the employee in the workplace. In many hospitality workplaces ââ¬Å"quality is centred on guest satisfactionâ⬠(strategy), because of this ââ¬Å"managers and staff should not only be empowered, but compelled to do whatever it takes to make it right on spotâ⬠(strategy). Empowerment can also continually let your employees grow within a job, increasing job satisfaction with the company. Continuing along the path of job satisfaction, Blackshop can also introduce employee ownership programs and promote within the company. Employee ownership programs give their job a sense of meaning, and a sense of fairness. Programs like the managing partner programs can be ââ¬Å"the cornerstone of success, allowing you to attract the bestâ⬠(strategy). As referred to earlier, this can lead to a ââ¬Å"human resource competitive advantage through superior human capitalâ⬠(strategy). Blackshop must seriously consider introducing the Open Table system. The benefits of introducing it centre on a better table management system, a new and improved reservation system, and a powerful email marketing tool. It allows Blackshop to have greater customer satisfaction through a higher level of process control, utilizing information technology systems such as the internet. Open Table is also an information gathering tool, proving huge benefits for company. Employees can create ââ¬Å"interpersonal bondsâ⬠with guests, gaining their trust, which can lead to word-of-mouth promotions. All of which can lead to more customers which fulfils the managerââ¬â¢s job of ââ¬Å"maximising the number of guestsâ⬠(cerny). Balckshopââ¬â¢s operational strategy should first introduce the Open table system. After which, all employees should be fully trained on the new system. Having employees understand the new reservations system and table management system are the key to the continued success and growth of Blackshop. Blackshop should continue to use its system of stringent employee screening programs so that they employee the person who best fits in line with the service concept and operational strategy. After completing this stage of the process, management need to address their marketing program. This should begin by entrusting one or more of the employees with the marketing manager position. This involves starting up a company website with all relevant information on it and deciding on new marketing themes for different advertising mediums. The marketing approach must consider emotional and rational appeals. It must appeal to people through rational information such as price and service excellence, but more importantly, it must appeal emotionally to the customer. The operations strategy must also involve programs or fundamental ideas that create job satisfaction. This can be done through promoting within, empowerment in decision making and employee ownership programs. Creating and operational strategy that ââ¬Å"links together well with available resources will determine the final outcomes yielded from a rersourceâ⬠(j6).

gun control Essay Example
gun control Essay Example gun control Essay gun control Essay Gun Control On December 14, 2012 twenty-six people were fatally shot and killed, twenty of them were children. Ever since this traumatic day certain portions of the population have been advocating gun control. Honestly I think gun control should be advocated when innocent people are dying due to gun violence. The second amendment states that we have a right to bear arms, but that really doesnt seem like the case anymore. Maybe if people would stop using them to murder innocent people we would be able to use guns freely without looking suspicious. There have been many mass-murders efore the Sandy Hook Shooting, lets not forget the Columbine High School Massacre, when two high school seniors went in and killed eleven students and one adult. I am for gun control, because with all the mass- murders, and deaths due to gun violence, we need to have a little more law toward gun control. For instance when you see someone with what you think is a gun and you shoot them. Like George Zimmerman and Traynvon Martin. Mr. Zimmerman saw the kid who was Traywon and shot him because he thought that he had a gun and shot him. : Most Republicans in the House of Representatives have top rankings in the National Rifle Association, the powerful gun rights lobby (CNN, 2013), and this put Beams plan in a very difficult situation to win congressional votes In the House of Representatives. Officials from some states and second amendments fanatics have planned to resist or fight the new gun controls saying that Obama and his administration want to steal their freedom. Some states have introduced a bill that will impede gun control laws such that it would be a felony for law enforcement to implement new gun controls and could spend up to five years in Jail (Business Insider, 2013). Obama persuasive action Obama In his state of the union speech he reminds Congress and the Americans at large of the calamities guns have brought to the united States, as a leader he wants o touch the heart of all Congress men and women, there is even the gesture of inviting the victims and kids who have written letters to him to push for gun restrictive legislature. In order for Obama to gain support, he should never single out any stumbling block and should reach out to all stakeholders involved. The Cultural map This a true picture of a cultural map, a lot of people In the united states have always the wild wide west, this is the culture to them. This is then supported by second amendment were in the past militia where used in wars and in there revolution against colonial powers but in this civilized world guns have proved to be more harmful. Leadership is an essential resource for creating and sustaining organizations, communities and societies, as such scholars have classified it into different styles that is classical and new style of leadership. Since leadership is essential, how then do leadership theories, concepts and styles help our new leaders like in the case of President Obama Gun Control. What leadership style should he adopt and is it possible for a leader to achieve his goals on the same leadership style. Before we dwell on what dervish style should be adopted like in the case of the President Beams Gun Control, it is important to elaborate more on the leadership styles. Leadership literature has been categorized into the classical leadership which is trait and behavior/style theory of leadership and new leadership styles which includes contingent and transformational theories (Tudor Richards, 2012). It should be noted that research has failed to prove or resolve if a leader can run a big dynamic and complex organization with a single specific style of leadership. During 1880 to asses leadership style called trait theory evolved, this theory deals with the quality in personal traits that a leader must pose like Intelligence, charisma, confidence, credibility, emotional intelligence. Behavioral style leadership on the other hand links leadership to the behavior patterns of leadership, this changes the thinking from a born leader to a made leader (Douglas McGregor, 1960). Studies have identified two critical attributes of leadership behavior which are consideration and initiating structure. In analyzing his leadership style using classical leadership styles shows hat he is actually equipped with the necessary traits, the behavior pattern also show him as a leader whose behavior pattern has evolved from being the first black president of the Harvard Law Review in 1990 and heading of community development programs for poor African-Americans to Senator and now President. The new leadership styles which will apply to him in his democratic leadership will be the Contingency and Transformation leadership styles. The contingency or situation leader styles have all factors that can affect leadership that is the people, ask and the organization itself (Attainment, Heckler Mascaras, 1961). This leadership style recognizes the power in the leader (the US president), the power in legislation). A leader like his subordinates would like to identify his subordinates independence and freedom to identify and deal with problems using their knowledge and experience. The power in the situation will be determined the nature of the problem, depending on how difficult his situation is or how much pressure it is receiving, the leader is expected to be heroic and charismatic to drive the goals.

Political Science Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 4
Political Science - Essay Example ssumed that, ââ¬Å"in the face of a convergence in canons of taste, conceptions of work, recreation, and consumption, people would also take on a more international identity and thus render the nation-state less salient than in the past.â⬠(140) However, as it turned out, neither communications nor the wonders of technology could significantly erode the nation-state. As a matter of fact, it appears to reinforce it. In the perspective of the realists, countries must deal with the challenges that globalization brings by expansive projection of national power such as through increases in military capacities and efforts to open its market to foreign trade. The realism approach to international relations is anchored on the idea that the current international system is inherently lawless that a nation can protect itself from the power of others through alliances and diplomacy if possible and military force if necessary. (Starr 2007, 114) Amid globalization, we have seen the reemergence of rampant nationalism as illustrated in the Balkan conflict, in the areas of the former Soviet Union and to some degree, the relationship of countries within the European Union, one of the success stories of global integration. The realist perspec tive fosters nationalism and the strengthening of national institutions to address the challenges that international economics, politics and security entail. In this theory, a higher level of integration is not necessary to address international challenges. The idea is that integration must be used as a tool to advance national interest and not the way around. Essay Question : Which of these theories - realism, liberal institutionalism, constructivism, and dependency theory- in your view, best explains the central themes and events of the post-Cold War world? While I may be tempted to choose liberalism or dependency theory to explain international contemporary relations, I feel that more recent developments requires us to examine the merits of

Adapting to Changes and Situational Leadership Assignment
Adapting to Changes and Situational Leadership - Assignment Example The researcher further delivered some of the insinuations, findings and study limitations of integrated leadership roles in the public subdivision. One of the strengths presented in the article is increased morale due to better communication whereby the leader needs to constantly remain aware of the needs of his followers. Pauliene (2012) argues thatââ¬â¢s successful leaders should examine the ability of employees and communicate effectively. This can enable the leaders to lead the followers successfully; hence enabling them to perform their task effectively. Secondly, situational leaders should develop a positive and sizeable effect on the performance level of the federal agencies; hence achieving success (Fernandez, Cho and Perry, 2010). However, situation leadership creates confusion; thus it is likely to impact the work performance. Lastly, leaders might lose credibility and trustworthiness by their followers; hence poor work performance in the public sectors. One of the examples of that applies to situation leadership is an example of a director that was working in one the HR department in one of the clothes industry in U.S. The director was involved in a situation whereby he was about to leave for a holiday and his task was to be handled by an experienced assistant director. The assistant was very familiar with his responsibilities; thus he was excited to perform the task. However, instead, the director could trust the knowledge and skills of the assistant director; he decided to spend hours drafting a detailed list of work tasks for the assistant director. Therefore, in this situation, the work will be done perfectly, but the director damages a good relationship with the assistant director due to lack of trust and not being confidence towards the assistant director. Therefore, based on Hersey and Blanchard theories, the situation leadership applies to the above example of the director and his assistant. This is because situational leadership according to Hersey andà Blanchard focus on adapting managerial styles vital for meeting the distinct requirements in a given situation (Gong, Jia-Chi, and Jiing-Lih (2009).Ã

When Food Kills Essay Example for Free
When Food Kills Essay An outbreak causing the death of 31 people in Europe is causing wide speculation of the agriculture industry. The outbreak, caused by E. coli, supposabley arose from bean sprouts grown in an organic farm in Germany. All over the world food-borne illnessess are hopstitalizing and even killing people. Just in the United states 325,000 people are hospitalized and 5,ooo die every year because of the wide spread of food-borne illnessess. Farmers all over the world use antibiotics to rapidly increase the growth of there livestock, causing resistant pathogenes, which can ultimately become untreatable, though they still continue and process the meat. Most people do not know that more antibiotics are givin to livestock than humans, endangering our health even more. MRSA, one of the most common antibiotic-resistant pathogenes is now widespread in hog barns, even people who deal with them. Unlike the United States, other countries are begining to ban distributing antibiotics to livestock. In the article Kristof often gives the audience facts concerning food outbreaks. To keep the readers interested, and believe what they are reading Kristof uses statistics, such as when he stated that 70 percent of hogs were found with MRSA in only one farm. He also plays an emotional toll on the audience, for example, when he recalled the story of skydiving instructer, Josh Nahum developed a life threatening fever, caused by a bactiera that wasnt responsive to medication. He became paralyzed after parts of his brain started to push into his spinal column. After a couple weeks of using a ventilator to breathe, he died. Learning about how serious and the amout of lives food-borne illnessess take it brings more attention to the problem, and also keeps Kristofs readers engaged in the article. In my opinion, feeding livestock antibiotics in their feed, to make their growth rate rise rapidly, is not only extremely harmful to the livestock, but more importantly, to humans. To have the animals develope much faster that normal is not worth thousands of people dying over it. Though the unsanitary ways both small, and larger scale restaraunts handle their food is also a big cause for food-borne illnesses. Even in our own homes many people are not being as sanitary as they need to be. If everyone would stop and continue with their work but maintain it in a clean and sanitary way, especially if they are working in the food industry, I believe there wouldnt be as many food-borne illnessess, especially if they are working in the food industry.

Drug Research Paper
Drug Research Paper Inhalants are wide variety of substances that young adults use as another way to get high. Inhalants cause mind-altering effects and typically someone would not think of these products as drugs because they were never intended for that type of use. Inhalants are very easy for young adults to find and many different types are even in their own homes. Inhalants can be anything from household cleaners to aerosols to gases. Inhalants are administered by breathing in through the nose or mouth in a variety of ways sniffing or snorting the fumes from the containers.People who use them can also inhale fumes from a balloon or a bag which would be filled with the inhalant of choice. The high from the inhalant only lasts a few minutes which causes users to continue to inhale substances many times over a short period of time and having greater effects. The physical impacts caused from inhalants are very similar to what someone would be like if they were to get drunk from alco hol. Symptoms would include slurred speech, little to no coordination, euphoric, and dizziness. Users may also experience hallucinations, and delusions.Users who frequently inhale will feel less control of their body for a longer period of time and may feel drowsy and have severe headaches for several hours and can possibly carry over to days with the same headache symptoms. Depending on the chemical inhaled users will experience added effects such as confusion, nausea, increased heart rate, and throwing up. The behavioral impact from inhalants can be a short state of excitement and also confusion and hallucinations. Users also will have sudden mode swings and the inability to made clear and smart decisions.Long term effects from inhalants that are very harmful and some irreversible effect areas all over the body. One of the long-term effects that is very serious and is from excessive inhalants is the break down of myelin. Myelin is a fatty tissue that surrounds and protects nerve f ibers and helps messages get sent all over the body. Due to excessive use of inhalants will cause serious damage to the myelin and that will lead to muscle spasms, tremors, and the high possibility of losing basic abilities such as walking, bending down, and talking.Other serious irreversible long-term effects from inhalants are hearing loss, limb spasms, severe brain damage, and bone marrow damage. The use of inhalants among teens and adults is very high due to the easy access they have to wide varieties of them. Over 17 million people have experimented with inhalants. Inhalants are also the fourth most abused substance in the United States. Rohypnol is a drug that is very common and targets the central nervous system. It is used as a depressant medicine and is currently illegal for all use in the United States. Rohypnol has many names but is most commonly know as roofies or the ââ¬Å"date rape drugâ⬠.Rohypnolââ¬â¢s sedative effects are about 7 to 10 times stronger than Va lium. Effects hit the victim within 15 to 20 minutes after being taken. Rohypnol is administered by young adults recreationally but most often and most commonly given to someone without them knowing they have just taken the drug. Due to its odorless and tasteless characteristics it can easily be slipped in a drink and dissolve quickly and therefore the person being administered the drug has no idea was has happened or that they have or are about to take it. The physical impact of rohypnol is it is known to cause temporary muscle relaxation, sleep, and impaired motor skills.Rohypnol also increases the effects of alcohol and other drugs without your knowledge. Also rophynol causes people to no remember certain things that went on such as events at a party or bar. Rohypnol also causes drowsiness, dizziness, loss of motor skills control, lack of coordination, blurred speech, confusion, all lasting up to and sometimes beyond 12 hours. The behavioral impact from use of rohypnol is depende nce for the drug and the withdrawal syndrome when the drug hasnââ¬â¢t been taken in a period of time. The most common effect from rohypnol is memory loss and the feeling of not being able to control yourself.Although rohypnol is most commonly used a sedative, chronic use of the drug can cause very aggressive behavior and possibly seizures. Also if a person has overdosed on rohypnol it is possible they can have problems breathing and fall into a coma. Long term effects from rophynol use are physical and psychological dependence. People who suffer from excessive use of the drug feel like they canââ¬â¢t live without it and are unable to do anything or feel good and have major withdrawal effects. The drug is most prevalent with teenagers and adults from ages 13 to 30.Due to its low cost only about $5 dollars per pill it makes the drug more available to people and then making it more abundant in the areas such as parties and bars. My assigned treatment plan is the Motivational Inte rference Therapy. What this treatment plan does is it offers counseling sessionââ¬â¢s motivational therapy and multiple step programs to help pull the patient out of addiction and back to living a healthy life. The first stage involves encouraging the patient to overcome their dependency behavior and tries to help them see the life without their addiction and try to convince them it is possible and build their confidence up slowly. The second step is to show the effects of their addiction on themselves and how they can remove it from their life just like it came in. This session is done 2 to 4 times depending on the patientââ¬â¢s addiction. The final step is to motivate the patient to completely give up on drugs and show them it is possible and that they can do it. The pros to this method are that they are consistently motivating, reminding, and showing you the positives to getting out of addiction. The cons to this method are that I think this style might not work for everyone and that some people may need a different type of program one that moves at a slower pace that allows them to really see themselves and what addiction has done to them. Also I think patients would need to spend more time at each stage to really break through their addiction. The drug addiction this method is made more is all cases of addiction but not so much the heavy addictions of drugs and alcohol but it can definitely help most cases of addictions.
